Hammer Options for Ruger Single Action Revolvers
Hammers, hammers, hammers! How to make sense of them all?
Basically you have five (5) different hammers that Ruger uses in large frame Single Action revolvers. Number 3 and number 4 are the same hammer with different knurling. All of these can be used in any of the “large frame” revolvers. However, using the Bisley hammer in any other model requires modification to the grip-frame or the hammer itself.
The latter is the cleaner more professional option. As seen in #5.
1. The NewVaquero hammer is only used in the New Vaquero model.
2. The original Vaquero hammer is also found in the New Model Blackhawk and the CFDA revolver.
3. The Montado and SASS hammer is the Super Blackhawk hammer with a unique knurling on the spur. This
hammer appears in the Montado, SASS 45LC set and the SASS .357 set. These models have a rectangular border
with checkering in the middle of the spur. (Shown welded for Short Stroke)
4. The Super Blackhawk hammer is used in the Super Blackhawk revolver. The Super Blackhawk hammer has
straight horizontal serrations on the spur. The most popular hammer chosen when switching.
5. The Bisley hammer is found in the Bisley model.
The SB hammer below is showing the “Groovy Hammer” treatment most Mounted Shooters love. $60.00
If you need your thumb to stay on the hammer better, this will do it.
